Expanding diversity across traditionally male roles

Transporting and processing cash for businesses such as retailers and banks has traditionally been a male dominated role. However, this is a business area that Terri Moore has worked in for 18 years, 15 of which have been with G4S. She is keen to point out that it is an industry that is suitable for both men and women. In fact, as her own career path can demonstrate, it is an industry where women can succeed to a very high level.

“My management team is about 50% male and 50% female” she says. However, she adds: “It is a different story with our drivers. Out of a total of 67 drivers, only two are women. We still need to break down barriers of perception because we get very few applications for driver jobs from women.”

When Terri joined G4S she was initially appointed as a Senior Cashier, a similar position to the role she had previously held at Danske Bank. However, she found that G4S were supportive of her own ambitions to grow, and she was promoted within a year to a managerial position, initially as temporary maternity cover and then quickly into a permanent position.

Supporting career development through training and flexibility

Teri is keen to point out how G4S has helped her develop her own career. She explained: “G4S has a great culture that allows you to make improvements and to bring ideas to senior managers. This includes your own career development. For me that has included a Regional Leadership Programme, Level 7 as the Lean Six Sigma Process Engineer, and First Class Honours in a Business Degree. I wouldn’t have been able to do any of that without the support of G4S, but the support has been there for me from the offset.”

This support has ranged from flexibility around her hours when she needed to attend lectures as a part-time student and, more recently, time off to help support her young daughter transition into a creche.

This flexibility is something that Terri sees working across her wider team. She said: “We have people who structure their hours around childcare for their children or grandchildren. Others have reduced their hours as they work towards retirement. I think keeping up with the need of employees is as crucial as anything when it comes to being successful as a business because they're our most valuable asset.”
