Alwiya's Two Decades of Care

Alwiya's Journey Begins

Alwiya Aboudi has dedicated 20 years to pastoral care in custody. Before joining Oakhill Secure Training Centre (STC) four years ago, she spent 16 years at HMP Woodhill, becoming the first female Muslim chaplain appointed in the adult estate. At Oakhill, she is affectionately known as "Aunty" by both colleagues and the young people she supports. Her initial role involved providing pastoral care and support to young people during the often daunting admissions process.

Early challenges likely included navigating the complexities of working with vulnerable young people in a secure environment. Her first projects likely involved establishing trust and rapport with the young people, offering guidance and support during their time at the centre. She provides a calming presence and reassurance, offering compassion, comfort, and optimism. Her early career goals likely involved making a positive impact on the lives of the young people in her care and fostering a sense of hope and belonging.  Alwiya consistently goes the extra mile, spending time with those without visitors and celebrating significant events.

Alwiya's Current Impact

Alwiya's career has progressed to a vital role at Oakhill STC, where she is highly respected by both staff and young people. Her achievements include receiving a commendation from Her Royal Highness Princess Anne for her dedicated service.  She has developed strong interpersonal skills and a deep understanding of the needs of young people in custody. Her impact is evident in the positive relationships she builds with the young people, helping them to feel valued and supported. She has received recognition for her exceptional work, highlighting her commitment to the well-being of those in her care.

Her current responsibilities include providing pastoral care, offering guidance, and supporting the young people through challenging times. She gives birthday cards and vouchers, and cooks to celebrate significant events, often in her own time. Her future aspirations likely involve continuing to make a positive difference in the lives of young people and advocating for their well-being within the secure estate. She inspires respect and kindness, making everyone feel appreciated.

Aunty is one of the first people the children see during the admissions process... Her calming nature and reassurance undoubtedly helps this process... she offers compassion, comfort and optimism.
