At Oakhill Secure Training Centre we look after young people aged 12 to 18 years old who have been remanded or sentenced to periods of detention. The vulnerable young people in our care can be challenging with a wide range of social and emotional complex needs. This is an environment that calls for high standards of social care and service delivery to provide a secure and stable environment for young people to develop their life skills and address the behaviours that have led them into custody.
Oakhill Secure Training Centre works closely with the Youth Custody Services to ensure that its regimes and designs reflect best practice in residential care to prevent offending.
The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of managing a large team to successfully deliver the day-to-day running of the resettlement agenda, including promoting the safeguarding, positive behaviour and care of young people. Additionally being responsible for the development of a centre resettlement strategy. There is a focus on successful resettlement from the very outset, and consistently throughout the entirety of their time at the centre. Ensuring the sentence planning is led by: Desistance, needs and risk, interventions that are targeted and follow through from the custodial to community element of the sentence and effective information sharing. Act as Duty Director for the centre on a rostered basis.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the resettlement of children, identifying, promoting and making known good practice. Draw on learning from across the youth justice system. To improve resettlement practice and outcomes. Incorporating learning/best practice into operational guidance, to support operational delivery.
- Liaise with other departments and external agencies to ensure that the young people receive appropriate plans and programmes that meet their needs and the needs of the Contract. Ensure that implemented plans are routinely followed and give measurable improvement outcomes for individual young people.
- Case management and transitions consider the relevant resettlement pathways ensuring that young people serving custodial sentences receive, end-to end service provision, based on a thorough assessment of need and risk, in order to reintegrate them into the community, in conjunction with partner agencies
- To ensure that all young people leaving custody can access suitable and sustainable accommodation with support where appropriate, in conjunction with partner agencies.
- Young People are provided with suitable and sustainable Education, Training and Employment throughout their sentence and beyond, supporting 16 & 17 year olds to meet their duty to participate.
- To ensure that families of young people in under our care receive timely, high-quality support and information, from the point of arrest and throughout the young person’s time within the Centre.
- To ensure young people leaving custody and their families are provided with information and advice so that they are able to access appropriate financial support.
- Monitor contract compliance and service delivery to ensure effective systems are in in place to achieve YCS requirements, particularly around the resettlement agenda.
- To ensure no child or group of children is treated any less favourably than others. Access to services or the fulfilment of particular needs should not be impaired by. Age, Disability, Gender reassignment, Marriage and civil partnership, Race, Religion and belief, Sex and Sexual orientation.
- Develop effective Partnerships, sharing knowledge and expertise in the spirit of stimulating reform and being inclusive of others. Maintaining relationships with other child-focused stakeholders for the benefit of children and their communities.
- Govern the management, coaching and support of resettlement care staff, including supervision, to maximise their performance and ensure high standards of care, values, ethical standards, equality and diversity, policies and procedures, legislative, contractual and inspection framework requirements are met.
- Lead on in the induction, assessment and planning process to ensure effective behaviour management plans and placement takes place
- Lead on Family Services at Oakhill STC, supporting the Family Interventions Officer.

The Ideal Candidate:
The successful candidate must hold a professional Qualification in a relevant subject: Psychology Degree, Sociology Degree, Criminology Degree or Foundation Degree in Youth Justice and have previous managerial experience within child-care/secure care environment.
They must also have a good understanding of young person case/risk management structures, excellent report writing skills and an ability to use Google Docs, Sheets & Email.
There will be a requirement to carry out Duty Director responsibilities on a rostered basis so you must be willing and able to do this as required.
