Looking for a secure career? Are you a good communicator? Do you have resilience? A good listener?

G4S Care & Rehabilitation Services (CaRS) already successfully manages 4 prisons, one secure training centre and a number of community contracts in England and Wales. The philosophy of our prisons is to rehabilitate offenders and equip them to re-integrate into mainstream society on release. We seek to normalise prison conditions as far as possible to reflect life in the outside community. Our aim is to create an environment in which staff and residents feel safe.

There is an exciting opportunity to join the PE Department as an operational PCO. This role plays an integral part in delivering purposeful activity for prisoners in our care, and serves as a positive outlet for stress and frustration.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate discipline and excellent team working skills, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and have good interpersonal skills. You will need to be confident in managing prisoners in group settings, both in the gym and whilst instructing outdoor activity.

Part of this role involves the delivery of accredited, vocational PE courses as a way for prisoners to access basic key skill support that will contribute to individual learning plans, linked to offender management.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is passionate about promoting physical health and fitness, showing a keen interest in actively developing and motivating others through pro-social modelling and building positive relationships. Consistently high standards of professionalism are expected from our staff to ensure our delivery objectives are achieved and maintained.

You will be expected to undertake a Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification if you haven’t already obtained this. Additional training and qualifications will be provided for the successful applicant.

As an operational PCO, you will be expected to support the wider prison when necessary, which will include cross-deployment in other areas and external escorts.

Some of the key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Promote, develop, and deliver physical education programmes and activities for prisoners.
  • Deliver gym inductions, including health and safety and equipment usage.
  • Appropriately vet and allocate prisoners to courses. Carry out initial risk and health assessment of prisoners, liaise with healthcare to ensure that they receive a medical check-up where required and assist with the rehabilitation of sports injuries.
  • Identify opportunities for and manage prisoners’ participation in external activities, events, and award schemes.
  • Act as internal verifier for internal courses offered.
  • Provide fitness training for staff and contribute to ‘Well Being’ Days.
  • Conduct daily equipment safety checks and maintain record logs.
  • Supervise, manage, and control prisoners decently, lawfully, safely, and securely while carrying out all activities.
  • Conduct searches on prisoners, staff, and visitors as required.
  • Undertake external escorts when necessary.
  • Establish, develop, and maintain professional relationships with prisoners and staff.
  • Understand and comply with national and local policies and legislation

The Ideal Candidate:

You must be passionate about your field and want to inspire and encourage others to make meaningful changes to their lives whilst in custody. You will support and drive our Healthy Lifestyle Campaign that encourages our residents to actively engage in physical activity, utilising and maximising on all tools that a new build establishment has to offer. This will not only include our large gym but urban gyms in the yard spaces and multi-use games areas to increase sports activities.

The people in your care will have a variety of different needs and it will be your role to ensure those individuals are treated with dignity and respect and helped to find a new way of life whilst maintaining a safe, secure and structured environment.

You will play a key role in providing prisoners with structure and routine, making sure they get to work in the morning within the Prison, are actively engaging in education or work and the prison regime and are secure in their cell in the evening.
