At Oakhill Secure Training Centre we look after young people aged 12 to 18 years old who have been remanded or sentenced to periods of detention. The vulnerable young people in our care can be challenging with a wide range of social and emotional complex needs. This is an environment that calls for high standards of social care and service delivery to provide a secure and stable environment for young people to develop their life skills and address the behaviours that have led them into custody. 

Oakhill Secure Training Centre works closely with the Youth Custody Services to ensure that its regimes and designs reflect best practice in residential care to prevent offending.

 

Working as a member of the Chaplaincy Team, to load weekly Friday Prayers (Arabic: لةَا عةَمُ جُ صَ  ْٱل , Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah) for children at Oakhill. To support children in the Centre who associate with following the Islamic faith, by providing appropriate worship and teaching opportunities, in line with contractual requirements and best practice. 

This role is for 26 hours a week days and times TBC but will cover the Friday Prayers period.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • To liaise with the Muslim Chaplain as to timings, arrangements and plans for the weekly Friday prayers.
  •  To assist with set up and tidy up of the allocated area.
  • To lead Friday prayers for the children.
  • To be available for conversations and discussion following the prayers.
  • To understand the basic safeguarding and security issues within Oakhill STC.
  • To be aware of how to report any concerns or matters that might require action.
  • As required, to engage new admissions, and go through the Chaplaincy introduction and induction process.
  • To conduct Unit visits and engage children and staff as opportunities arise.
  • To liaise and support the arrangements for Friday Prayers when held.
  • When in the Centre, to be aware of events, incidents and activities that have taken place, and carry out duties with these situations and circumstances in mind.
  • To work alongside other departments and teams to provide a full and ‘whole-person’ provision of pastoral care, and other support, as is possible and appropriate.
  • Provide a daily record of interactions, activities and movements within the Centre relating to chaplaincy responsibilities.
  • Whenever possible and while on duty, to support and attend events, celebrations, and other Centre activities held throughout the year.
  • Where appropriate, and possible, attend meetings relating to chaplaincy provision, safeguarding responsibilities and other relevant areas of work.
  • To undergo appropriate G4S training, as necessary and required.
  • Assist in the promotion of creating a positive Health & Safety culture across the site leading by example, this includes reporting accidents and near misses in a timely manner & follow the applicable safe systems of work for the role.

Essential Skills

  • Experience of Leading Prayers for those of the Muslim faith.
  • Experience of organising and leading religious services.
  • Underpinning knowledge of a multi-faith approach
  • Experience working with vulnerable and challenging young people.

 

Desirable Skills

  • Experience of project/ work planning, monitoring and reviewing.
  • Self motivating and able to work alone.
  • Team player
