The Prison is the UK’s first purpose-built, new resettlement Prison. After opening in 2022 it is a one of a kind new generation category C new build Prison for the future and has become an integral part of the local community.
G4S Care & Rehabilitation Services (CaRS) already successfully manages 4 prisons, one secure training centre and a number of community contracts in England and Wales. The philosophy of our prisons is to rehabilitate offenders and equip them to re-integrate into mainstream society on release. We seek to normalise prison conditions as far as possible to reflect life in the outside community. Our aim is to create an environment in which staff and prisoners feel safe.
We are looking for a Sustainability Coordinator to join our FM team to assist in the co-ordination and development of the site Sustainability Plan and ensure compliance with current and future legislation.
In addition you will assist in the development of environmental strategies to ensure sustainable development, this will include working on all areas in the delivery of efficiencies in utility consumption, waste management, conservation and biodiversity within the Establishment.
Some of the key responsibilities of the role are:
- To support G4S in moving towards a 'net zero' carbon estate, decarbonising heat and meeting targets set under the Greening Government Commitments, and any future Government sustainability targets,
- To comply with all reporting requirements under the Greening Government Commitments and FReM, including G4S targets and performance monitoring
- To assist in the development of and ensure the Services, the Prison, the Site and the Authority are compliant with all relevant current and future environmental and energy Legislation
- To assist in the development of and maintain the Sustainability Plan which shall be updated annually and shall include plans for reducing energy, carbon emissions, water use, waste and enhancement of biodiversity
- To assist in the development of and coordinate all aspects of pollution control, waste management, recycling, environmental health, conservation and renewable energy
- Support with the central team to maintain the EMSs and assist the implementation of systems based on a recognised standard
- Be cognisant of any new Government initiatives or technology in sustainability or environmental management, in order to best practise on new systems, processes or technologies (etc.) which may be beneficial to the Sustainability Policies and Strategies
- Supporting with the Health & Safety Team to set out actions to reduce energy and carbon emissions, particularly reducing carbon emissions from heating, reduce water and waste and enhance biodiversity in line with agreed targets and recognised industry targets
- To assist in the development of and implementation of environmental strategies and action plans, to ensure corporate sustainable development.
- To assist in the development of the sustainable procurement for all goods and services and ensure all major maintenance works comply with the requirements of BREEAM Sustainable Construction in particular increasing resource efficiency, reducing carbon emissions and waste and enhancing biodiversity
- To assist in the development of and Ensure effective management of energy and water consumption and ensure that the consumption of utilities are minimised
- Promote and assist in the development of and to raise awareness, at all levels across the establishment, of the impact of emerging environmental issues
- Implement best practice in areas of corporate, ethical and social responsibility and address any issues arising
- To assist in the development of the organisational sustainability targets, developing plans to meet those targets and their delivery.
- Assist in the promotion of creating a positive Health & Safety culture across the site leading by example, this includes reporting accidents and near misses in a timely manner & follow the applicable safe systems of work for the role.

The following professional qualifications/experience or working towards would be desirable but not essential for this role;
- Environmental sciences or management, engineering - with a sustainability focus.
- Affiliated Membership of or working towards a recognised environmental body such as IEMA - Institute of Environmental Management Associates
