About Us
G4S Oakhill Secure Training Centre (STC) cares for children aged 12 to 18 years old who have been
remanded or sentenced to periods of detention. The children in our care can be vulnerable and
challenging, with a wide range of complex social and emotional needs. This is an environment that calls for
high standards of social care and service delivery to provide a secure and stable environment for children
to develop their life skills and address their previous behaviours. We aim to support change and learning.
We strive to help every child feel safe, giving them an opportunity to heal from trauma and feel supported
in developing a more positive identity. We ensure our children have equal access and opportunity for
change and are celebrated for their strengths. We want the children in our care to leave better equipped
for life emotionally, mentally, physically, and socially. We aim to support the constructive resettlement
and transition of our children, whether returning to the community or moving to other custodial settings.
We are committed to working in partnership with them and their families, significant others and wider
community organisations, to develop a quality regime at the centre.
About the Role
We are now expanding our Education team and we are looking for a Functional Skills Cover Teacher to
deliver accredited learning to young people undertaking Functional Skills study programmes at Oakhill STC.
As a Teacher of Functional Skills, you will play an integral part of a child’s learning at Oakhill Secure Training
Centre to provide and deliver aspiring educational outcomes. You will be responsible for delivering
teaching that develops curious, inquisitive and committed minds, where you help and support the children
to explore and meet their individual needs and interests.

Not only will you be a Teacher, but a mentor to young lives who will develop transparent and collaborative
ways of working to engender openness, trust and inclusion with the children. The regime at the centre
needs to balance safety, safeguarding, health, wellbeing and learning and development opportunities for
the children.

the future via Education and Learning.
Some of the key responsibilities of this role are:
- Plan, develop and deliver allocated education in accordance with the timetable and National Curriculum so that individual young people’s needs are met.
- Planning and delivering Functional Skills English and Maths lessons.
- Marking, assessing and tracking progress – reporting data to the Head of Education.
- Cover other academic lessons when required.
- Responsible for differentiating work appropriately and taking SEN(D) learners into account.
- Promoting a positive and purposeful engagement in Maths and English and the benefits of this to the working world.
- Developing and maintaining professional relationships with young people between the ages of 11-18.
- Provide an emotionally safe and non-judgmental environment for the young person to continue their learning journey.
- Liaise with relevant key stakeholders to ensure an integrated approach to young people’s care and education.
- Assist in the development of educational materials, ensuring quality and consistency of approach.
- Manage the teaching environment ensuring security of equipment and welfare of young people in line with contractual requirements.
- Assist in the promotion of creating a positive Health & Safety culture across the site leading by example, this includes reporting accidents and near misses in a timely manner following the applicable safe systems of work for the role.

About you
To succeed in this role, you will need to be a dynamic and engaging individual, with a passion for helping,
mentoring, and supporting at the heart of everything you do. The role will require you to promote a child
centred approach which prioritises both the safeguarding of the children’s welfare and wellbeing as well as
ensuring that a stable and secure environment is provided for all the children and employees at the Centre.
The successful candidate must have a post Graduate Certificate in Education qualification, ideally in Maths
or English or a relevant teaching degree and Achieved Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
You will play a huge part in the rehabilitation of a child’s future journey and life choices. We are looking for
a highly motivated, caring and determined Education professional, with the ability to be resilient, confident
with a tenacious can-do attitude, have the ability to embrace complexity and be a part of a busy,
supportive and fast paced team.
