About the role and team

We are looking for a First Nations Liaison Officer to join us at Mount Gambier Prison. Reporting to the Resettlement & Reintegration Manager and working closely with Case Management Coordinators and a Social Workers, the role is responsible for support services to First Nations prisoners located in specific areas of the Mount Gambier Prison. In the role you will:

  • Provide culturally specific support to First Nations prisoners and assist them with family liaison issues.
  • See newly admitted First Nations prisoners within 48 hours of admission.
  • Attend risk review meetings where prisoners have been identified as being a self harm or suicide risk, and provide input during these meetings as needed.
  • Provide information of a cultural nature to new employees as part of their initial training course induction.
  • Hold smoking ceremonies at the Aboriginal Healing Circle for important cultural events, and manage cultural celebrations including NAIDOC week and Reconciliation week.
  • Liaise with the Aboriginal Services Unit at the Department for Correctional Services.
  • Link prisoners with outside agencies as necessary, including Aboriginal Legal Services and local organisations.
  • Attend case reviews of First Nations Prisoners.

What we're looking for

  • Holder of a current driver's licence or probationary driver's licence, with access to reliable transport
  • Experience working or volunteering with Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander peoples/communities (highly desirable)
  • You identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
