£38,480.00 per annum

Permanent - Full Time (40 hours per week)

At Oakhill Secure Training Centre we look after young people aged 12 to 18 years old who have been remanded or sentenced to periods of detention. The vulnerable young people in our care can be challenging with a wide range of social and emotional complex needs. This is an environment that calls for high standards of social care and service delivery to provide a secure and stable environment for young people to develop their life skills and address the behaviours that have led them into custody.

 

Oakhill Secure Training Centre works closely with the Youth Custody Services to ensure that its regimes and designs reflect best practice in residential care to prevent offending.

 

The Activities Coordinator will provide enrichment activities for all young people at the centre. They will be a key contact for both staff and young people enhancing the young people’s experience. The post holder will maintain a highly visible presence across the centre, encouraging, supporting and leading by example.


The position involves a high degree of planning, logistics and networking.  There is an expectation that you will work on bringing in new contacts and nurturing old to help with the ever changing dynamics and interests of the children.  The role takes a lot of energy and enthusiasm to keep everyone engaged and motivated.

 

Ideally, the post holder will hold a qualification in youth work, a level 3 sports coaching discipline, or have a background in engaging young people into activities but this is not essential. Experience of working with young people in a secure setting is desirable. Any interest or hobby that could be transferred to a club or activity would be highly desirable.

 

You will be a fully trained Secure Care Officer also so there will be times and expectations where due to operational need or demand you may need to work within the centre in other capacities.

 

Due to the nature of this role you will be required to work shift work; the times will be agreed at interview.  You will work every other weekend.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the promotion of creating a positive Health & Safety culture across the site leading by example, this includes reporting accidents and near misses in a timely manner & following the applicable safe systems of work for the role.</li>
  • To develop, coordinate and supervise a programme of enrichment/activities at the centre
  • To complete, manage and distribute timetables and rotas ensure that all young people at the centre have the opportunity to take part in enrichment activities and that the department is contractually compliant
  • To look at engaging the young people in activities that fulfil inclusion, diversity and equality education and information sharing
  • To work to expand external opportunities available for the young people at the centre with local providers through positive links with the local community and external partners.
  • To map and compile information for all young people of the range of enrichment activities available
  • Ability to interact positively with young people in a secure setting
  • Ability to work unsupervised and manage own time effectively, while being well organised and self-motivated
  • Ability to think creatively and be innovative in introducing new activities, themes and concepts
  • To understand that the operational need of the centre will always be a priority and therefore there will be times that you will be asked to work in other departments or units

  • Ability to use IT to a high level of competence
  • A flexible and adaptable personality that can use initiative to achieve targets.
  • The ability to be resilient to change and pressures.
