At Oakhill Secure Training Centre we look after young people aged 12 to 18 years old who have been remanded or sentenced to periods of detention. The vulnerable young people in our care can be challenging with a wide range of social and emotional complex needs. This is an environment that calls for high standards of social care and service delivery to provide a secure and stable environment for young people to develop their life skills and address the behaviours that have led them into custody.

Oakhill Secure Training Centre works closely with the Youth Custody Services to ensure that its regimes and designs reflect best practice in residential care to prevent offending.

Job Outline:

To be responsible for the religious welfare and spiritual needs of the children - of all faiths, whilst promoting the safeguarding of children’s welfare.

In addition, the pastoral oversight of the Centre and its staff.

Key Responsibilities:

• Visit all areas of the Centre on a frequent basis to offer support and be accessible to all children, and staff.
• Provide children with worship and teaching opportunities in the Christian faith, and meet contractual faith obligations of the organisation, in line with current Ofsted requirements and best practice.
• Help organise and facilitate a comprehensive and engaging programme of religious activities in the establishment, in line with contractual requirements, to meet the spiritual and faith needs of the children.
• Maintain and develop a multi-faith chaplaincy provision, representing mainstream religious groups, to meet the needs of children from all faiths or none, who are in the Centre at the time.
• Maintain community and faith links so that the support provided within the Centre is current, in line with best practice and caters for all faiths.
• Manage the efficient control of the departmental budget so that cost effective and timely services are provided.
• Respond to contingency planning in order to provide support where necessary.
• Deliver relevant training and support to staff, as required, to enhance understanding of different faiths.
• Liaise with other disciplines and departments, sharing information and providing support and advice to colleagues to enable effective management.
• Work closely with Chaplaincy colleagues, employed, or voluntary.
• Work with the Equalities and Diversity lead to monitor and improve outcomes across departments.

Essential Skills:

• Experience of organising and leading religious services and other events.
• To have the necessary recognition from lead faith authorities.
• Self-motivating, organised and able to work alone.
• Experience of working with vulnerable and challenging children.
• Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
• Competency in using and understanding technology

Desirable Skills:

• Experience of project/ work planning, monitoring and reviewing
• Underpinning knowledge of a multi-faith approach.
• Experience of working in a people-facing role.
• Managing conflict
• Experience of offering bereavement support.
• Live in the MIlton Keynes geographical area, and/or be a car driver.
