About the role and team

Our Custody and Transport Officers are responsible for the safety, security, and humane custody of individuals in our care. We manage custodial operations across Justice Services in the Northern Territory, including the Custody Watch House and Local Law Courts in Darwin, and across the NT region. You will join an evolving team across growing operations, working under the guidance of our Custodial Supervisors and Operations Manager.

Your responsibilities will be to facilitate secure physical movement of people in custodial settings, supervision and care of people in custodial and medical settings, and logistical management, moving people between custodial settings. This varied role will see you achieve:

  • Watch House Operations: You'll be responsible for managing the daily routine of people in custody and the Watch House operations.
  • Court Cell & Custody Management: You'll be responsible for court cell management, escorting people in custody to and from courtrooms, and managing the custody of people awaiting court appearances.
  • Secure Prisoner Escort & Transportation: You'll be responsible for safely transporting people in custody to designated locations such as courts, medical appointments, hospitals, and custody centres.
  • Secure Hospital Bedsits: You'll be responsible for continuous security monitoring and observation, risk mitigation, reporting, and ensuring patient welfare within a public health setting.

This role also has a high focus on Documentation and Reporting. You will be preparing quality verbal and written reports relating to prisoner information, prisoner assessments, incidents, and transport logs - and ensuring documentation complies with legal requirements.

Remuneration & Roster

The role will support a 24/7 roster, providing a variety of different shift patterns across the various Justice Services.

You can earn up to $85,000 across the 24/7 roster pattern, with hourly rates and penalties detailed below:

Weekdays - $33.17 | Nights - $38.15 | Saturdays - $49.76 | Sundays - $66.34 | Public Holidays - $82.93

What we're looking for

We're looking for effective and empathetic communicators who are adaptable to changing work environments. We are looking for people who engage well with others, have families or engage in community groups, Experience working in people/customer facing roles, customer service and high teamwork environments are strongly encouraged to apply

People are central to our business, so the ability to communicate with others is a key requirement.

You'll be engaging directly with people in custody, so it's crucial that you're comfortable with working in a custodial environment, looking after all individuals in your care. It is essential that you:

  • Hold a full and current Australian driver's licence,
  • Are eligible to work full-time in Australia, with no restrictions
