Head of Engineering - International (Based in Leicester, UK)

We have an exciting opportunity for someone to join our team here at Allied Universal, in the role of Engineering Manager. If you are an experienced Engineering Manager who enjoys a varied workload in a fast-paced environment this role could be for you. 

Overview of the role

The successful candidate will have responsibility and accountability for the Engineering function across our International Business, with team members based in and outside of the UK.  The role will include people, project and budgetary management. Working for the Director of Operations - International, the Engineering function is core to what we do and our product development and delivery. 

The breadth of the role will include partnering with the R&D function supporting innovation, design and development then bringing the product to life, taking the concept and turning it into a deliverable solution. You will then partner with the operational teams to ensure exacting manufacturing standards, developing the production process and ensuring  our products are delivered to the highest standard providing effective solutions to our customers. 

Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities

  • Overall responsibility for Engineering activities across the business.

  • Create and implement best practice, defining the engineering vision, strategy, policies, processes and procedures to aid and improve business and product performance

  • Develop a strong understanding of customer requirements evaluate the challenges faced by the business and take action to mitigate risks and develop opportunities

  • Initiate and develop creative and innovative engineering processes

  • Providing technical support to the business development and onsite engineering teams maintaining a strong link with R&D and Operational functions

  • Effectively manage and support our Contract Manufacturers, ensuring timely and effective responses and resolutions to any manufacturing/quality issues in conjunction with the relevant Quality Lead.

  • Responsible for overseeing all aspects of build design, from contract award to handover. Involvement as necessary in new business tenders

  • Develop planning and prioritise processes to ensure that multi-disciplinary resource is well aligned to maximise delivery of projects

  • Ensure any new equipment or engineering activity is supported with appropriate qualification documentation and that this is appropriately stored. Ensure up to date drawings are maintained appropriately

  • Coordinate with manufacturing to ensure manufacturability of product while maintaining quality, safety and environmental standards and achieving cost targets in a timely fashion

  • Operate a process for safe selection of external contractors. In conjunction with the Purchasing manager, ensure all external contracts are regularly reviewed to ensure best value

  • Ensure that Environmental, Health and Safety, engineering and quality standards and procedures are adhered to

  • Effective co-ordination and management of multiple simultaneous projects

  • Set department objectives and monitor ongoing progress and performance

  • Ensure strong communication between teams under leadership to facilitate exchange of information and in order to implement change and improvements

  • Provide leadership, coordination and coaching to the team, ensuring they are trained enabling them to achieve the operational and financial metrics within their areas of responsibility and succeed in their roles

What skills are we looking for ?

  • Strong communication skills; including written, verbal and presentation skills. Ability to communicate on an individual and group basis.

  • Problem solving and analytical skills.

  • Knowledge of product costing / Financial awareness.

  • Planning and execution, ability to bring tasks to satisfactory conclusion.

  • Leadership skills - functional area expertise and general management.

  • Relationship management - Internal and external including 3rd party suppliers.

  • Strong sense of ownership 

  • Resiliance

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously 

  • Educated to degree level (preferably Masters) in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent NVQ Level 7 qualification.

You will be able to demonstrate

  • Proven project management and supplier experience

  • Experience of operating and influencing at a strategic level

  • Knowledge and technical understanding of engineering processes and design techniques

  • Ability to add value, reduce costs and make business improvements

  • Experience of leading an engineering function with a proven track record in strategic engineering leadership delivering effective engineering strategies, policies, processes and systems
