Within Care and Rehabilitation Services, the philosophy of our prisons is to rehabilitate offenders and equip them to re-integrate into mainstream society on release. We seek to normalise prison conditions as far as possible to reflect life in the outside community. Our aim is to create an environment in which staff and prisoners feel safe and causes of prison stress are minimised. Central to our philosophy is the relationship between staff and prisoners. Our training and operational practices emphasise the need to treat prisoners with dignity and respect and G4S staff build positive and supportive relationships with the prisoners in their care. HMP & YOI Parc accommodates 1800 convicted male adult prisoners and remand/ convicted young offenders and young people in a secure but modern environment.</p>
We are seeking a knowledgeable individual with diverse experience of working within a custodial environment to play a leading role in shaping HMP & YOI Parc’s approach to supporting veterans in custody. A key HMPPS priority, our veteran’s population face unique challenges and this role recognises the importance of providing a bespoke service to support their effective reintegration into society. You will coordinate and drive the development of the Veterans strategy within HMP Parc. You will continue to develop the practices and specialised interventions run across the establishment as well as developing and delivering services for ex-forces veterans within the vulnerable prisoner population. You will play a key role in identifying, building and nurturing relationships with a range of departments and partners as outlined below:</p>
Key Responsibilities
- Co-ordinate programmes and supervise delivery of specific projects aimed at the specialised needs of the veteran population within the prison and offering ‘through the gate’ opportunities for offenders up until their release.
- Facilitate and monitor prisoners learning and personal development ensuring full compliance with prison service requirements and operating instructions.
- Adherence to the Quality Assurance procedures at HMP & YOI Parc.</li>
- Identifying Careers, education and training opportunities
- Community contact with participants families.
- Personal progression and soft skills for the veterans.
- Ensure diversity and opportunities for all learning styles and abilities
- Development, supervision and delivery of relevant evidence based interventions, acupuncture, mindfulness, veterans coffee mornings, family focused interventions, in conjunction with the PSF model as dictated by the Family Management Team.
- To assist in the collation of statistical information from activities undertaken, on a regular basis. Receive and review completed interventions and other data including:
- Numbers of participants on programmes
- Completion rates
- Progression onto appropriate interventions
- Any other sustained interventions and support
- Diversity information.
- Develop a peer led service across the prison estate to assist the Veteran’s strategy.
- Work closely with Offender Management, Security, ETE and all other departments with the sole purpose of ensuring relevant information is shared amongst colleagues.
- To represent the department as and when required internally and externally.
- Comply with all Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
- Follow organizational systems and procedures outlined in company manuals.
- Significant multi-agency collaboration with voluntary and statutory partners, families and communities in order to increase the capacity and effectiveness of the service. This includes co-ordination of multi-agency events and engaging in / guiding multi-agency steering meetings.
- To prepare reports and briefings on the development of the Endeavour and Vulnerable persons unit relating to veterans in custody.
- To adhere to existing working practices, methods, procedures, undertake relevant training and development activities and to respond positively to new and alternative systems.
- To carry out any other reasonable duties and responsibilities within the overall function, commensurate with the grading and level of responsibility of the post
Essential Skills
- Evidence the knowledge and understanding of well-being approaches.
- A working knowledge of a positive phycology strength based approach.
- Up to date and in-depth knowledge of the veterans support opportunities in custody and community.
- Proven ability with stakeholder engagement.
- Diverse experience of working in a custodial environment with offenders
- Delivery/supervision of a variety of workshops and interventions
- Providing Information, advice and guidance work and employability, training and house.
- Understanding of barriers that have negative impact for achieving change.
- Understanding of the needs of disadvantageous or excluded groups in society and an awareness of the Equal Opportunities/Anti-discriminatory practice principles relevant to address these needs
- Presentation skills
- Identification of networks of extremal support organisations to benefit the units provision.
Desirable Skills
- Delivery / supervision of offending behaviour interventions.
- Personal experiences of veterans.
- Knowledge and understanding of the issues affecting disadvantaged families in accessing services.
- Knowledge and understanding of the emerging ACE agenda in wide ranging service delivery.
- Knowledge of IOM / Welsh Government 2020 Strategy for reducing risk of offending – specifically veterans and prisoner / family support service delivery.
- Knowledge/experience of working with disadvantaged learners and learners with additional needs.
