HMP Oakwood is an innovative prison which has been highlighted by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons as an “Impressive institution, with a culture of decency and respect. Within Custody and Rehabilitation Services, the philosophy of our prisons is to rehabilitate offenders and equip them to re-integrate into mainstream society on release. We seek to normalise prison conditions as far as possible to reflect life in the outside community. Our aim is to create an environment in which staff and prisoners feel safe and causes of prison stress are minimised. Central to our philosophy is the relationship between staff and prisoners. Our training and operational practices emphasise the need to treat prisoners with dignity and respect and G4S staff build positive and supportive relationships with the prisoners in their care. HMP Oakwood is one of the largest prisons in England and Wales, providing places for up to approximately 2100 Category C male prisoners.


We now have an opportunity for a Tutor to join our team at HMP Oakwood.


The successful candidate will be required to undertake delivery of Employability related subjects throughout the wider prison.


Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver the curriculum relevant to specialist
  • Assist in the development of learning materials to ensure quality and consistency of teaching materials.
  • Undertake assessments so that residents have the opportunity to achieve recognised qualifications.
  • Supporting them to write CV’s and cover letters
  • Explaining and demonstrating  how to read and understand payslips
  • Budgeting and money management, explaining how to work out monthly and weekly pay and adapt their budget accordingly
  • Help residents to understand what skills they have and how they can transfer these skills to various trades.
  • Refer individuals for support with their maths and English
  • Support any ESOL learners by referring them to ESOL
  • Support WS13 and the mentoring programme
  • Engage with employers and build up strong rapport, creating links and job opportunities for residents upon release.
  • Partnership work with NOVUS, Resettlement and Job Centre
  • Organise Employment Fairs, inviting employers and training providers into the establishment to show case the support and opportunities ready for residents upon release.
  • Complete all documentation as required to meet the requirements of the Company, the contract and relevant external bodies.
  • Monitor student progress so that students receive appropriate support to achieve their goals and contractual requirements are fulfilled. 
  • Manage the teaching environment ensuring security of tools and equipment and maintenance of equipment to contractual requirements.
  • Assist in maintaining a positive Health & Safety culture
  • Ensure the maintenance of security within the prison environment by compliance with security instructions
