At Oakhill Secure Training Centre we look after young people aged 12 to 18 years old who have been remanded or sentenced to periods of detention. The vulnerable young people in our care can be challenging with a wide range of social and emotional complex needs. This is an environment that calls for high standards of social care and service delivery to provide a secure and stable environment for young people to develop their life skills and address the behaviours that have led them into custody. 


Oakhill Secure Training Centre works closely with the Youth Custody Services to ensure that its regimes and designs reflect best practice in residential care to prevent offending.


We are looking for a Trainee Forensic Psychologist to work to reduce the risk of reoffending and ensure safe custody of the young people in the STC.


Key Responsibilities

All of the following responsibilities must be carried out under the supervision of a registered forensic psychologist

  • Develop and provide individual offending behaviour programmes with young people to enable them to reduce reoffending, including the appropriate selection of young people for each group based on responsivity, risk and need.
  • Assist in the planning and production of annual programme schedules for the programmes so that young people’s needs are met
  • Promote Oakhill’s work in programme delivery by networking and involvement in appropriate conferences, regional and national meetings and ensure that current best practice is followed
  • Carry out appropriate assessments and provide feedback to the specialist Interventions team so that informed decisions can be made regarding young people within the STC
  • Undertake individual psychological intervention and assessments of young people
  • Be involved in the development, delivery and evaluation of staff training
  • Support staff to maximise their performance and ensure values, ethical standards, equality and diversity, policies and procedures and contractual requirements are met
  • Participate in the risk assessment during admissions process to ensure that the immediate vulnerability and risk of the young person is determined accurately.
  • Assist in the promotion of creating a positive Health & Safety culture
  • Ensure the maintenance of security within the secure training Centre environment by compliance with security instructions
  • Provide psychological opinion and consultancy support where required to a range of staff in the STC
  • Conduct relevant research and evaluation          
  • All staff employed by G4S has the responsibility for their own Health & Safety and to their colleagues in order to assist G4S in its obligation to achieve British Safety Council Requirements at all times.

The Ideal Candidate:

Essential Skills

  • Will work towards registered status with the HCPC with whichever registration route is agreed with the employer


Desirable Skills

  • Psychology degree
  • Experience in delivering and evaluating offending behaviour programmes
  • Experience of project/ work planning, monitoring and reviewing
