As a member of our substance misuse team, you will work within the Offender Management model to identify, interview and assess prisoner risk levels within national guidelines. You will work closely with Offender Managers to implement the sentence plan by ensuring close collaboration with key workers and interventions within custody, whilst ensuring appropriate information is passed on via OM structures to manage risk both in custody and upon release.
Through the use of Counselling techniques such as Brief Intervention work and Motivational interviewing and based on quality Assessment which appropriately screens, prioritises and informs effective care planning, to build on information from and make Referrals to other services, both in custody and in the community.
You will provide timely Advice and support to minimise the harm from drug use to self and others and to ensure the provision of effective Through-care by ensuring continuity of care before, during and after release.
- Provide all Problem Drug Users/clients who engage with substance misuse work a clear and thorough explanation of the boundaries of confidentiality, exchange of information and informed consent.
- Carry out appropriate assessment of the client to: determine nature and extent of substance use; explore how this impacts upon all aspects of their life identifying problematic areas; prioritise need, using information gathered to inform care plan.
- Construct good quality, individualised Care Plan in collaboration with the client, ensuring objectives are SMART, to meet their identified needs and are reviewed on a regular basis.
- Make appropriate referral where necessary to other relevant interventions both in prison and in the community, as identified to assist the client to meet care plan objectives, ensuring sufficient information is made available to support referral.
- Provide relevant information, advice and individual support to clients with the aim of reducing risk of harm to themselves, family, friends and the wider community; reducing the risk of overdose, spread of communicable diseases and lapse or relapse.
- Contribute to assessing the risks, and minimising the effects of immediate danger, harm and abuse to substance users, and support individuals to review situations and actions after the immediate risk has passed, contributing to the ACCT process as appropriate.
- Provide structured key work sessions to support and assist clients to meet care plan objectives.
- Facilitate psychosocial interventions as required and in line with guidance in CARATs Practice Manual.
- Promote effective communication and integration with all relevant departments within the prison, especially healthcare to ensure there is a holistic approach to treating a client.
- Participate in, contribute to and undertake OASys Assessments carried out within the Offender Management Model / OASys framework.
- To ensure risk information is communicated with other areas of the establishment via internal risk management processes
- To maintain accurate assessments and records for individual caseload within the OM model.
- To assess for and refer prisoners to appropriate interventions (programmes) within the establishment.
- To carry out reviews in order to assess the reduction in risk and complete reports as appropriate for re-categorisation boards.
- To carry out HDC and ROTL Risk Assessments as appropriate.
- To participate in the parole review process as appropriate.
- To manage a generic caseload of offenders within required frameworks and timeframes in order to manage and reduce risk.
- Liaise with the OCA department in order to allocate prisoners for whom HMP & YOI Parc cannot meet offending behaviour needs.
- Act in accordance with security and operational instructions at all times to ensure the maintenance of security within the secure environment.
- Assist in maintaining a positive Health & Safety culture in line with British Safety Council 5 Star standards.
The Ideal Candidate:
- A minimum of one years experience of working within the substance misuse / Criminal Justice field.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- A willingness to self-evaluate performance and behaviour
- Ability to work in a non-judgemental manner with offenders of all categories and risk factors
- Ability to use Word, Excel, and other IT systems
- Ability to manage and prioritise own workloads.
- A relevant qualification in Social Care, criminology or other associated subject
- Flexible thinking and solution orientated thinking.
- Ability to be innovative
