G4S Health Services has been one of the leading providers to all justice health environments since 2005. Working across Secure, Custody and Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARC) across the UK, we provide primary care and forensic healthcare to a wide range of patients.

HMP Altcourse is a Category B local prison receiving sentenced and remand young offender and adult male prisoners from the courts in Merseyside, Cheshire and North Wales. The prison can accommodate 1,324 prisoners in safe custody. 

At HMP Altcourse we are committed to providing the highest standards of healthcare to prisoners in our care. Our healthcare team is staffed 24 hours a day and is made up of qualified Nurses and Health Care Assistants.


Job Outline: To pro-actively lead and manage a clinical team which provides community equivalent recovery services within a secure environment. Ensuring professional, contractual and company requirements are delivered consistently at all times.


What's Involved

  • Ensure all staff, including yourself, participate in regular Clinical and Management Supervision
  • Coordinate care pathways between community recovery services and custodial services ensuring a seamless transition both into and out of custody, liaising between primary and secondary services in the establishment.
  • Ensure robust assessments of patients are undertaken to identify substance misuse issues/dependencies physical and mental health needs and determine the appropriate level of intervention, care and management.
  • Facilitate the provision of clinical recovery service to patients to ensure the highest professional service is delivered at all times in line with contractual and company standards, including security instructions.
  • Implements a positive health, safety and infection control culture to maintain a safe environment for all stakeholders.
  • Facilitates effective communication between staff of all disciplines.
  • To maintain confidentiality at all times, adhering to data protection and maintaining Caldicott Guidelines.
  • Able to manage action plans, implementing change and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure relevant documentation is completed by all staff in an accurate and timely manner

The Ideal Candidate:


  • Part 1 NMC registration
  • Experience of delivering recovery services in community or custody
  • Understanding of the most up to date government/NHSe substance misuse guidance
  • Experience of HJIP and NDTMS submissions.
  • Significant Knowledge and understanding of Substance Misuse
  • Experience of leading and working within a team
  • Experience of investigating patient deaths in line with duty of candour and NHSe requirements
  • Evidence of managerial experience
  • Evidence of further development of own clinical practice
  • Able to demonstrate a high level of literacy and numeracy
  • Able to provide examples of diversity in practise


  • Experience of managing budgets
  • RCA training
  • Experience of working within a secure environment
  • Degree level qualification or above
  • Experience of leading a project on innovation or change
  • Experience of leading an area of training or development.
  • Familiarity with recruitment and selection of staff
  • Hold a Nurse Prescriber qualification
  • Hold a Nurse Practitioner qualification
  • Driving Licence.
