As a Shift Supervisor, perform duties necessary to supervise a shift of Firefighter/EMTs while performing their duties. The Shift Supervisor will be responsible for ensuring that their shift responds to all calls, whether emergency or non-emergency, in a timely fashion. The Shift Supervisor will further be responsible for ensuring that their shift completes all day to day tasks assigned. This includes inspections, training, and vehicle and apparatus maintenance, etc. The Shift Supervisor will further be responsible for ensuring that the policies and procedures of G4S as well as each facility are adhered to, including attendance, uniform, work procedures, etc. The Shift Supervisor will also be responsible for ensuring that violations of the policies and or procedures are documented and advanced through the chain of command.

Role Responsibility:

Specific Duties and Essential Functions

  • Oversee a team of Firefighters/EMT; ensure shift responds to all calls
  • Conduct inspections, training, and vehicle and apparatus maintenance 
  • Document all violations of the policies and or procedures and ensure violations are advanced through the chain of command
  • Perform security patrols of designated areas on foot or in vehicle; watch for irregular or unusual conditions that may create security concerns or safety hazards
  • Respond to fire, medical and other emergencies
  • Issue hot work permits and confined space permits, perform tank sniffs
  • Conduct inspections per schedule
  • Maintain fire protection systems, fire equipment, fire pumps/systems, and hydrants
  • Maintaining composure in dealing with authorities, executives, clients, staff and the public, occasionally under conditions of urgency and in high pressure emergent situations
  • Required to participate on Hazardous Materials Team (HAZMAT) and other specialized teams

The Ideal Candidate:

Education, Licenses and Certifications Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current and valid State of Illinois Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license
  • Current and valid driver’s license
  • Must possess a valid Basic Life Support CPR/AED card from American Heart Association, the American Red Cross or EMS
  • Must possess a current Hazardous Materials First Responder at the Operations Level certificate in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.120(q), or be able to complete within 30 days of hire
  • Must possess NIMS 200 certification, or be able to complete within 30 days of assignment
  • Must have a minimum of OSHA Confined Space Certification
  • Must have attended and passed the G4S-Client Leadership Development Course
  • Must have passed the G4S-Client promotion process and been added to the Fire Lieutenant Promotion list
  • Must possess one or more of the following:
    • Fire academy graduate from a State certified or Department of Defense certified training facility meeting the NFPA 1001 Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications training guidelines
    • Firefighter I or Firefighter II certificate from a State Fire Marshal's office or from the Department of Defense adopted by the state where fire services are performed

Type and Length of Specific Experience Required

  • If previously employed, meaningful and verifiable work history in any field

  • Must be at least 18 years old or the minimum age required by the state, if higher
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or a foreign citizen authorized to legally work in the United States
  • Must have driving record clear of moving violations, infractions, or DUI’s per MVR
  • Must possess a thorough knowledge of fire protection principles and techniques
  • Must successfully pass NFPA 1582 firefighter medical exam conducted by a licensed physician
  • Must not use illegal drugs. Must be able to pass a drug test with negative results (except when undergoing documented medical treatment).
  • Must submit to an extensive background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment and education verifications, and Department of Motor Vehicle and credit checks if applicable
  • Must be able to provide, upon job offer, a DD214 discharge document with discharge status indicated, if prior military

Physical Requirements and Environment

Environment:  Indoor and outdoor, weather temperatures range from moderate to extreme cold and heat

Major activity:  Walking, standing, speaking, listening, observing

Physical efforts to carry out job duties:  Standing, running, walking, and sitting.  Stooping, maneuvering heavy objects, and kneeling required often. Frequently maneuvering up to 125 lbs. and occasionally maneuvering up to 200 lbs. with assistance.
