G4S Health Services has been one of the leading providers to all justice health environments since 2005. Working across Secure, Custody and Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARC) across the UK, we provide primary care and forensic healthcare to a wide range of patients.

A Sexual Assault Referral Centre is a dedicated centre providing a comprehensive service to men, women and children who have suffered sexual assault, both for those who wish to involve the Police and those who self-refer.  Utilising a multi-disciplinary team of Doctors, Nurses, Crisis Workers, Police Officers and support staff the SARC will provide crisis support, appropriate facilities and trained staff for completion of forensic medical examination, provision and advice regarding aftercare including emergency contraception, pregnancy testing, as well as facilitating counselling and ongoing support via third sector agencies and Independent Sexual Violence Advisors.

 

We are recruiting for a Sexual Offence Examiner in the Bristol, Gloucester and Swindon area.

 

As a Flexi SOE, you will be required to give your monthly availability and will then be allocated shifts based on this. The shift times available are 08.00 – 20.00 or 08.00 – 20.00.

 

​Job Outline: You will be conducting forensic medical examinations which are 2 purpose examinations, one to help the police investigate a possible crime and the second to take care of the holistic needs of your patient, in order to attempt to minimise the potential physical and psychological sequelae of the crime. Child protection reports and appropriate sharing of information are an important part of the work. Should a “case” go to court, you are expected to write a court statement and attend court, if needed, to give evidence. 

 

 

Whats involved:

You will be joining a kind and compassionate team who are passionate about providing quality care to complainants of sexual assaults of all ages. The work includes conducting forensic medical examinations that are dual-purpose examinations encompassing holistic healthcare needs alongside the impartial gathering of forensic evidence according to Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine (FFLM) guidelines. These examinations utilise trauma-focused care in order to attempt to minimise the potential physical and psychological sequelae of the crime. You will be requested to write child protection reports following pediatric cases and statements on request. You may be called to attend court to give evidence as a professional witness.


This is highly specialised work and training is provided therefore, prior to starting; you will be required to attend induction training program for sexual offence examination and due to the nature of the work must clear enhanced police vetting. You will be expected to shadow experienced nurse and medical examiners in order to demonstrate competencies prior to being signed off to practice independently. There is a reduced rate of pay prior to being signed off to practice independently. To maintain your competencies you must engage with clinical governance processes, access the update see a minimum of 20 cases per year and attend four peer review sessions. The Ideal Candidate:

Essential Skills as a Sexual Offences Examiner (SOE):

  • Full registration with the GMC with a license to practice
  • Minimum 3 years post graduate experience in a relevant specialism (such as Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Genito-Urinary and/or Reproductive & Sexual Health, General
  • Practice, Accident & Emergency
  • Experience & competency in gynaecological examination, including speculum examination
  • Knowledge of and compliance with child and vulnerable adult safeguarding procedures
  • Ability to communicate well, with both adults and children
  • Immediate Life Support
  • Safeguarding training
  • Medical Indemnity (MPS/MDU/MDDUS)
  • Driving license and access to own vehicle
  • You must live within 2 hours drive of each of the SARCs

 

 

Desirable Skills:

  • Ability to perform a rectal examination using a proctoscope
  • Forensic qualifications LFFLM/DLM//MFFLM
  • Other relevant specialty qualifications e.g. MRCGP/ DCH/ MRCPCH
  • Previous experience in clinical forensic medicine particularly sexual offence examinations
