This role and contract sit within our Facilities Management sector of G4S where we aim to improve the lives of people across the UK and Ireland by creating productive, safe and smooth working environments.

We have an opportunity for Porters to join our team as part of our contract with the NHS, based at Churchill Hospital, OX3 7LJ.

This is a full time role working 37.5 hours per week, covering various shifts.  


Job Summary:

As a Senior Porter, you will be responsible for ensuring that portering services are delivered safely, progressively and cost-effectively to prescribed standards according to Trust policies and procedures and meet the needs of patients, visitors and staff.


Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Follow Trust policies and procedures, ensuring that you work towards the Values. 
  • Provide leadership and direction to staff.
  • Develop and implement departmental aims and objectives, suggesting ways to improve departmental performance to the Portering Manager.
  • Assign general and specialist portering tasks in accordance with departmental priorities, assisting in the preparation of duty schedules, organising and arranging staffing cover in the event of sickness, absenteeism or annual leave.
  • Monitor, supervise and keep accurate records of staff time keeping, attendance, sickness, annual leave etc., and other records which may be required in the day to day running of the Portering services.
  • Ensure staff have sufficient equipment and materials available to meet service requirements.
  • Ensure that all tasks listed within the Portering Specification are carried out safely, efficiently, and within the time constraints; that all calls and Bleeps are answered promptly, courteously and in accordance with agreed operational targets; that all patient transfers are completed within the specification requirement.
  • Ensure that all keys are secured when not in use by G4S/Trust and departmental staff.
  • Organise and undertake transit of bodies from wards to mortuary.
  • Support the team taking responsibility for training and development and maintenance of expectations related to all people management aspects.
  • Comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act and emergency procedures as required.
  • Follow all guidance and procedures relating to Healthcare Associated Infection to ensure their safety and that of others, to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Maintain adequate stocks of cleaning materials and equipment, in accordance with departmental and Trust procedures.
  • Participate in appraisal meetings and undertake staff appraisals as required.

The Ideal Candidate:

Essential Criteria:

To be successful for this role you will have an NVQ in Healthcare, Health & Safety Awareness, knowledge of COSHH and Manual Handling Training.

You will be able to work well as a member of a team, be able to communicate in spoken and written English, have the ability to motivate yourself and others, the ability to work under pressure and be able to organise and prioritise your own and the team’s workload appropriately.

You should have a respect for patient privacy, property and confidentiality and have the ability to work with a diverse range of people.
