As a Screener, you will be responsible for conducting screening activities using the department’s approved forms and procedures and preparing a youth file packets for various agencies when the youth meets detention criteria. The screener shall contact the JPO/case manager when applicable, advise the youth of his/her rights and complete the Screening Log.

Role Responsibility:

Specific Duties and Essential Functions

  • Conduct screening activities using department approved forms and procedures to determine if youth meet detention criteria.
  • Prepare a youth file packet for the court, the State Attorney, the Department’s Circuit Office, the youth’s attorney, and the Department’s Regional Juvenile Detention Center, when the youth meets detention criteria
  • Contact the JPO/case manager when applicable
  • Advise the youth of his/her rights
  • Complete the Detention Screening Log
  • Sound alarms or call police or fire department in case of fire or presence of unauthorized persons
  • Investigate and prepare reports on accidents, incidents, and suspicious activities
  • Provide assistance to customers, employees and visitors in a courteous and professional manner


The Ideal Candidate:

Education, Licenses and Certifications Required

  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Meet the requirements of a state licensing test if driving a company-owned or client-provided vehicle
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain, a Florida Class D/Security Officer License
  • Meet the requirements of any client required training and testing

Type and Length of Specific Experience Required

  • Must possess one or more of the following
    • Minimum of 2 years of prior law enforcement experience
    • Minimum of 2 years of prior military experience
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with youth
    • Associate’s Degree in any related field with one (1) year of experience for any of the above
  • Must possess one or more of the following:
    • Verifiable work history in any field
    • One or more years of verifiable and successful security experience
    • Associate’s degree or higher in any discipline
    • Service in the active duty military, military reserves or National Guard
    • Service in auxiliary police or police cadets
  • Must have experience working with computers or verifiable computer skills

  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Active listening skills
  • Ability to assess and evaluate situations effectively
  • Ability to identify critical issues quickly and accurately
  • Attention to detail

  • Must be at least 21 years old or the minimum age required by the state, if higher
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or a foreign citizen authorized to legally work in the United States
  • Be able to work flexible schedules
  • Must have access to reliable transportation
  • Must be able to operate radio or telephone equipment and/or console monitors
  • Must be able to interact cordially and communicate with the public
  • Subject to a drug screen to the extent permitted by law
  • Must be able to provide, upon job offer, a DD214 discharge document with discharge status indicated, if prior military

Physical Requirements and Environment

Environment:  Indoor and outdoor, temperature ranges from moderate to extreme cold and heat

Major activity:  Sitting, typing, walking, standing, speaking, listening, observing

Physical efforts to carry out job duties:  Standing, walking, and sitting. Minimal to no stooping or kneeling
