Job Introduction:

The G4S Deputy Chief will support and maintain the Constitution and laws of the United States and of North Carolina. They enforce the criminal laws of North Carolina within their jurisdiction. The Deputy Chief ensures department and county policies and procedures are followed and acts as the department head in the absence of the Chief of Police. The Deputy Chief performs duties of an executive administrator for the department and county government.


This is a responsible administrative/management position assisting the G4S North Carolina Chief of Police in directing the client. Work involves planning, coordinating and directing various activities of the department, including personnel management, public relations and related support activities. Work is performed with considerable latitude for independent judgment in accordance with policies and regulations of the department.

The Deputy Chief will act as G4S liaison with the client, law enforcement agencies, customers, and employees. This position is also responsible for management oversight and driving operational accountability through effective change management and leadership development processes at all client locations with Special Police positions. The Deputy Chief plans, organizes, directs, and controls the operational and administrative activities of the contracts on a day to day basis as well as proposing and implementing proactive measures to improve performance and expand the operation. This position is directly accountable for the success, performance, compliance, and public perception of the program

Role Responsibility:

Specific Duties and Essential Functions

  • Manages daily operations of the department, including policy development and implementation
  • Ensures coordination of the department efforts and staffing
  • Manages personnel processes and functions including hiring, promotion, disciplinary process, internal investigations and workers' compensation, and monitors all productivity/performance of department employees
  • Responds to employee grievances and participates in arbitration and mediation processes
  • Advises on contract negotiations between county and bargaining units
  • Meets with other governmental leaders and department heads concerning issues affecting the department
  • Acts as the department head in absence of the Chief of Police
  • Ensures the department operates within budget
  • Assists with the budget process
  • Attends meetings such as county chiefs, county board, public safety and justice committee meetings
  • Performs duties of a sworn law enforcement officer for the department / contract
  • Ensures smooth transition during a change in Chief of Police tenure, at times educating the new county sheriff on county policy and procedure
  • Assists, chairs and coordinates committees and teams as assigned by the county sheriff
  • Maintains prompt and regular attendance
  • Observes departing personnel to protect against theft of company property and ensures that authorized removal of property is conducted within appropriate client requirements

The Ideal Candidate:

Education, Licenses and Certifications Required

  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain, North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission Law Enforcement Officer certification
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain, Data and Crime Information (DCI) Certification through the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI)
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain, a current NC Automated Warrant Repository (NCAWARE) access credential

Type and Length of Specific Experience Required

  • Must possess demonstrated working knowledge of North Carolina General Statutes that deal with Law and Company Police Program
  • Must possess a minimum of 15 Years of civilian law enforcement experience
  • Must possess a minimum of 8 years of years law enforcement experience in a supervisor/management capacity
  • Must possess one or more of the following:
    • Currently Certified (General or Probationary) as a North Carolina Law Enforcement Officer
    • Possess a North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training Certificate (received less than 9 months ago)
    • Graduate of a police academy other than North Carolina and have been a full time police officer for at least the last 2 years and have not been out of law enforcement for more than 6 months
    • Prior Certified North Carolina Law Enforcement Officer who has not been out of Law Enforcement more than 2 .5 years

  • Must be at least 21 years old or the minimum age required by the state, if higher

  • Must have access to reliable transportation
  • Be able to successfully complete all training required for the position
  • Be able to operate radio or telephone equipment and/or console monitors
  • Demonstrated ability to interact cordially and communicate with the public
  • Subject to a drug screen to the extent permitted by law
  • Must be able to provide, upon job offer, a DD214 discharge document with discharge status indicated, if prior military

Environment: Indoor and outdoor, temperature ranges from moderate to extreme cold and heat

Major activity: Walking, standing, speaking, listening, observing

Physical efforts to carry out job duties: Standing, walking, and sitting. Minimal to no stooping or kneeling.
