At Oakhill Secure Training Centre we look after young people aged 12 to 18 years old who have been remanded or sentenced to periods of detention. The vulnerable young people in our care can be challenging with a wide range of social and emotional complex needs. This is an environment that calls for high standards of social care and service delivery to provide a secure and stable environment for young people to develop their life skills and address the behaviours that have led them into custody. 


Oakhill Secure Training Centre works closely with the Youth Custody Services to ensure that its regimes and designs reflect best practice in residential care to prevent offending.


We are seeking a dynamic individual who has experience of working in a fast paced and challenging Criminal Justice environment. They will be required to ensure the Safety and Well-Being of Children in the care of Oakhill Secure Training Centre.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a Violence Reduction Strategy to improve the safety and well-being of staff and children.
  • Act as the Strategic Lead for anti-bullying, self-harm and conflict resolution.
  • Ensure that legislative and contractual requirements are met with regards to use of force and restraint.
  • Monitor the use of force and restraint practice within Oakhill STC to identify areas of concern and best practice.
  • Provide and analyse data for the continual improvement of effective practice to support vulnerable children.  
  • Chair of the Community Safety meetings.
  • Monitor and review management information to ensure contractual compliance, quality standards and best practice.
  • Line management responsibility for the Enhanced Support Team, Minimising and Managing Physical Restraint (MMPR) Co-Ordinators, Conflict Resolution Team and Substance Misuse Team.
  • Joint working with HMPPS Forensic Psychology Team.
  • Develop internal training packages and co-ordinate facilitation to ensure that all establishment staff are aware of behaviour management processes and expectations.
  • To act as Duty Director and to ensure that all incident reporting procedures are followed along with the management of incidents.
  • Ensure all audit /assurance statements relevant to the functional area are achieved.

The Ideal Candidate:

Essential Skills

  • Managerial experience of working in a Criminal Justice environment.
  • Experience of developing and implementing policy and strategy.
  • Willing and able to carry out Duty Director roles and responsibilities on a rostered basis.
  • Experience of child Safeguarding.


Desirable Skills

  • Experience developing /delivering training
  • Experience of using data to improve outcomes for children.
  • Awareness of MMPR
  • Awareness of Conflict Resolution practice or Restorative Justice Principles.
