Salary £35,000 - £40,000 pa (depending on experience and qualifications)

Full-time (40 hours per week)

Located near Milton Keynes, Oakhill Secure Training Centre (STC) provides secure accommodation, education and care for young people aged 13 to 18 years who have been remanded or sentenced to periods of detention. We are now looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and dedicated Deputy Head of Education to join us ensuring contractual compliance whilst promoting the safeguarding of our young people’s needs and achievement of accredited outcomes.

About Oakhill Secure Training Centre

From the moment a young person arrives at Oakhill STC, we start planning how to meet their needs through the provision of an effective education and resettlement programme. This provides opportunities to gain social, life and educational skills whilst giving the young people the best possible chance to turn their lives around and break the cycle of offending behaviour upon release. The whole education team works alongside residential staff to regularly review the progress made by each young person and this ensures that improvement targets are meaningful and achievable, whilst linking to behaviour management and educational outcomes.

Many of our young people have had little involvement in education prior to their stay so we place great emphasis on improving their core skills whilst creating bespoke packages of one-to-one support to enhance their learning across a wide range of subjects. Our education provision follows the National Curriculum and young people are taught in small groups to maximise their learning opportunities.

About You

You will:

  • Assist in the management of the provision of education within the Centre so that a professional service is provided in line with the National Curriculum, contractual requirements, best practice and safeguarding standards.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of the timetable to ensure all young people have access to a broad and balanced education programme that meets their needs and provides opportunities for nationally recognised accreditation.
  • Coach and support staff to maximise their performance and ensure values, ethical standards, equality and diversity, policies and procedures, legislation and contractual/inspection framework requirements are met.
  • Manage the daily resourcing of the department, including delivering teaching as necessary, to ensure the continuity of education provision.
  • Assist in establishing effective communication ensuring that relevant documentation, information and reporting is processed and disseminated both accurately and in a timely manner in line with inspection, company and contractual requirements.
  • Assist in the selection, training and development of professional teaching and support staff to ensure service delivery is optimised.
  • Liaise with relevant stakeholders to ensure young people’s needs are met, best practice is shared and there is continuous improvement in the educational service provided.
  • Assist in the promotion of creating a positive Health & Safety culture to achieve and maintain recognition as a British Safety Council 5 Star business unit.

The role requires a professional teaching qualification and substantial managerial and teaching experience in an educational setting covering 14 to 18 year olds, including special needs.
