Stategic Development Director

I started my career with G4S in 2007 as a Bid Coordinator for G4S Care and Justice Services in the UK, on the first day my new manager handed me a Pre-Qualification Questionnaire (PQQ) to complete for a tender for Prisoner Transport Services in the Isle of Man; we had just over a week to submit our response – I soon became a fast learner as I entered the world of bidding!

My role was to coordinate the input into the response document from subject matter experts including operations, finance, legal and human resources and creating a professional response document to submit to the government procurement team.  For 18 months I worked on a range of projects, bidding for contracts in Immigration, Police Support, Prisoner Transport and Community based work programmes.

The experience from the role gave me a huge insight into the depth and breadth of G4S services for governments not only in the UK but around the world.  In 2009 I was promoted to the role of Business Development Manager, and took responsibility for the planning, preparation and management of prison tenders in the UK. A typical day as a Business Development Manager could include leading progress review meetings with the bid team, presenting to senior executives on commercial and operational solutions, taking part in workshops to create innovative operational solutions or meeting with our government customers.

The role took me on secondment to New Zealand in early 2011 to project manage a complex prison project with a global team from G4S.  Working with a range of partners I managed the development of the operational and commercial solution working with a multi-disciplinary team of expert advisors, corrections professions and tender writers. The experience gave me new insight into different ways of working and provided an opportunity for me to draw upon my experience in the UK and adapt best practices from my experience and from those of global colleagues to deliver a unique solution.

In September 2011, I accepted a position as Director, Strategic Development with G4S Australia / New Zealand. The focus of my role is to identify and successfully develop business opportunities primarily within the Care and Justice sector within Australia and New Zealand. This includes the growth of existing contracts as well as successful tendering of new business opportunities and scoping potential acquisition of businesses that align with the G4S group strategy. As part of this role, I am connected to a global network of Care and Justice Professionals within G4S and provide support and advice to colleagues around the world – as they do for me in return.

No two days are the same as I work on a range of projects with a team that manages the quality, performance and continuous improvement of the business. To grow the business a key element is to understand our government customer’s objectives when they look to the Private Sector for outsourcing. Our role is to develop ‘Solutions’ that can provide government with effective and efficient operations that deliver innovation over the course of our contracts. We seek to continuously improve our services and I spend a large proportion of my days working not only with colleagues in G4S but with existing and potential customers, partners and subcontractors.

Communication, people management and organisation are at the core of my role, and have been throughout my career with G4S. I have learned the business through the projects that I have managed and through the development opportunities that the company have provided for me and I continue to learn more every day.  I am confident in the team and the support network around me as I move forward in growing the business within Australia and New Zealand.
