General Manager Forensic Mental Health Security

The Wilfred Lopes Centre is a centre for Forensic Mental Health also known as a Secure Mental Health Unit.

It houses:

  • Prisoners with mental illnesses who require specialist mental health inpatient treatment;
  • People with mental illnesses appearing in or remanded from, Magistrate and Supreme Courts and requiring inpatient specialist mental health treatment and/or assessment;
  • People who are at risk of harm to themselves or others:
  • Those found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI) or Unfit to Plead and placed on a Forensic Order.

G4S has three Forensic Mental Health Contracts in Australia; The Wilfred Lopes Centre in Tasmania, Thomas Embling Hospital in Victoria and Long Bay Forensic Hospital in New South Wales.

As a G4S Security Operations Manager, I am responsible for the day-to-day operations such as rostering sufficient staff for the day to day security of the premises, achieving Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and the ongoing compliance needed to maintain the contract.

A usual week for a Security Operations Manager starts with rostering staff for the next week, which can be quite a challenge as often staff are required for additional duties with little notice.  It is my responsibility to organize the required number of staff for these duties, which can vary from Court Escorts to Funerals.  While the most important part of my day is to ensure all staff are fully trained in Operational Instructions and Emergency Orders.  To achieve this Security Officers are tested against hard copies or the Emergency Orders and Operational Instructions, as well as live contingency tests. Staff are the number one resource in the Security Operation Manager’s tool kit and the key to this resource is having the right people in the right jobs.

One if the most exciting parts of being a G4S Security Operations Manager is that no two days are ever the same. Often G4S Security staff are called to attend duress incidents; these are where Wilfred Lopes Centre staff have activated their duress alarm as they feel they are in a threatening situation. G4S security staff assist with controlling situation.

Being a Security Operations Manager is a varied and exciting job, as there are often new challenges to overcome.
