Training and development

Manchester Magistrates Court – Training and development

G4S has considerable experience of transferring workers to the company under the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) (TUPE) regulations.

We take time to understand the skills and aspirations of transferring workers.

Managing complicated TUPE transitions

We think G4S is a great place to work, and we want transferring staff to be enthusiastic about the opportunities on offer.

One of the core values of G4S is:

Best People – We always take care to employ the best people, develop their competences, provide opportunity and inspire them to live our values.

We are committed to investing in the skills and capabilities of our people and providing structured career paths, training and development to enable employees to achieve their full potential.

“Training wise, yes, G4S do a lot of training. I’ve just done accident training, accident investigation training, customer service, I’ve become a first aider through G4S and there’s lots of ongoing training. You don’t always realise you’re doing the training as such. You’re learning as you’re going along. You’re getting coached.”

Anne Jones, Cleaning Team Leader

We also take this opportunity to get to know each member of the team, their skill level and qualifications, and to discuss their aspirations and needs, so we can start to establish a programme of training and development.

“G4S are probably the best company for making you go further in your career. They won’t hold you back and they’ll help you to get forward or introduce you to people that you need to know in order to get to where you want to go, and I like the fact that they do that. I’ve never been held back. If anything, I’ve been encouraged to go further by [the Regional Director] and I thank him for that fact that he has given me that opportunity to get to where I am now.”

Samantha Graham, Security Team Leader

Manchester Magistrates Court

In 2004 G4S won a 25 year contract with HM Court Services to provide integrated hard and soft facilities management services to Manchester Magistrates Court. The contract included the transfer of facilities employees from the Court Service to G4Sunder TUPE regulations.

Offering opportunities for learning and development

We pride ourselves on our ability to develop the competence of our employees, to provide opportunities for learning and personal growth and to inspire them to live our values. All staff will receive an initial skills audit, following which we develop a personal training matrix to ensure that staff reach an appropriate level of competence.

“Every team is given a tool box talk, so they’ll have at least one or two every month on various issues that we have within the building…so every month they will be given training in house.”

Louisa Thorpe, Services Manager

We work in partnership with the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc), the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) to provide a series of job-specific training.

“It doesn’t matter what it is, whether it’s first aid training, SIA licence training, CCTV training – there’s mountains of it. As soon as we tell them there’s a need, it’s there. You can’t ask for anything more to be honest. I’ve probably got more than enough training to last me a lifetime!”

Samantha Graham, Security Team Leader

“I get fire training and health and safety training, and they work through different levels, so I’m on level one at the moment but I will shortly be put onto level two health and safety. I know that I’m next to go on a first aid course as well.”
