Stewart joined G4S in April 2010 and previously worked as a Customer Service Advisor and a Meter Installation Engineer. He joined the team at G4S as a Technical and Quality Engineer where he provided technical advice to installation engineers. The role also involved auditing the quality of the engineers’ work.
An opportunity arose in January 2011 to become a District Technical Manager. The role was an operational management position responsible for a team of around 20 engineers. Whilst Stewart did not have any formal management experience he was encouraged to apply by a number of Managers and colleagues, who could clearly see the potential for him to progress and be a valuable addition to the management team.
Stewart was successful in his application, and with support and encouragement from his Manager and colleagues, developed his management skills to cope with a whole range of people and operational management issues. Stewart has developed his confidence and can address individual problems and issues associated with the day to day management of a field-based team.
As a manager, Stewart was also given coaching through a Management Development programme facilitated by the Human Resources Department. The programme provided practical guidance for managers to deal with matters such as disciplinaries, grievances and absence. The programme also provided coaching on how to improve personal skills such as communication and time management.
Stewart says: ‘G4S is a driven and focussed organisation. It does provide opportunities for people to grow and develop in exchange for hard work and commitment. Within a relatively short space of time I have managed to gain some great new skills and experience that will assist me in my professional career.’
