Case Study: John Holder, Business Strategy Support Manager

John joined the Managed Services division (now G4S Assessment Services, part of G4S Risk Management) in 2005. John had a background of preparing bids in both scientific and commercial environments and joined the team as a Bid Design Analyst.

The role primarily involved designing the response to bids, but John was involved at every stage of the bidding process – from tracking the notifications of new projects, to writing content, to printing, binding and despatching the finished documents.

He received support and on-the-job mentoring from his line manager and attended courses to develop his skills and expertise.

Opportunities

When John had been with the company for 18 months, a position opened up in Integrated Services – a larger business with greater opportunities to develop his skills in more complex bids and other market segments. The role was Bid Writer/Technical Author, and John’s application was successful.

In his new role John was involved in structuring and reviewing bids and he also supported process improvement work. He gained greater exposure to the operational side of the business, and worked on bigger bids in a wider variety of industry sectors.

John’s role encompassed other diverse tasks, from documenting processes for the operational teams, to playing a major role in the successful submission to gain Investors in Excellence accreditation.

John was involved in creating systems within Business Services for knowledge management and storing information in a searchable and useable way using our document management system.

Career Progression

As the company developed and started bidding for private sector contracts it became apparent that there was a requirement for someone to manage the process of implementing a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system. There was also a need for someone to lead the knowledge and information management processes that would support the strategy planning function and, with the loss of the GSL press office, someone to work on the communications functions for the business.

John was appointed to the newly created role of Business Strategy Support Manager in January 2009. He now heads up a small team and has attended training courses to hone his leadership and management skills. G4S has also provided training opportunities to help John develop his technical skills, including a four day CRM Systems Administrator course.

A thorough understanding of G4S’ business is essential to John’s new role. His experience gained in different parts of the company has helped to develop this. In turn, John’s knowledge of different businesses has helped to create opportunities for joint working.

“When Integrated Services were setting up a new medical services business I suggested they used Data & Managed Services’ administration function rather than going outside G4S. I have also fed information on Integrated Services’ capability back to Managed Services to strengthen their bids, so it’s a two way thing”

John has received recognition for his work having been Integrated Services ‘Broadway Employee of the Year’ for 2008 and has been awarded Employee of the Month twice for his two IS roles.

I think that this can only increase following the acquisition by G4S as it is a very diverse, worldwide company. There might even be the chance to work abroad for a period of time”
